Mable Ruth Garrison Turnbow

Mable Ruth Garrison Turnbow, 83, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother
and grandmother, died on August 20, 2014, after a long and courageous battle
with leukemia.   She was surrounded by her family and friends when she went into the
Lord’s hands.  Mable or “Honey” as she was named by her grandchildren was born on
January 23, 1931 to Dewey L. and Ruby Teuton Garrison in Stantonville, Tennessee. She
grew up on the family farm and graduated from Adamsville High School. Mable worked as
a seamstress in a garment factory before she married her childhood sweetheart Grady
W. Turnbow Jr. With that marriage she became a Navy wife and accompanied Grady
to numerous Naval postings.  When her daughters, Debora and Denise were born, she made
a safe and warm home for them in each posting. When her husband was on sea duty,
Mable attended school and became a beautician.  Through her work as a beautician, she
met numerous people who became life long friends.  At one posting, Mable managed a
large apartment complex before returning to work as a beautician on the next transfer.
She eventually owned and managed two shops before retiring to enjoy her family and
grandchildren. Throughout these transfers, she was active in the church and
maintained her membership in her childhood place of worship, Mount Vinson Methodist
Church.  Mable attended the chapel on the Millington Naval Base.   She was frequently
the first person to greet new visitors and often acted as a surrogate mother
or grandmother to many in the Navy family. Mable attended Bible study and taught
Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  She also taught by example: kindness
and generosity, as well as a positive outlook. For Mable, every day was going to be a
“good day”. Mable is preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brothers,
Donald Garrison, Wayne Garrison,  D. L. Garrison and sister, Reba Garrison.  She is
survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Grady Turnbow and daughters, Debora
(David) Wallace and Denise (Donnie) Holland, three grandchildren, Ian (Veronica)
Wallace, Lauren (Joseph) Schultz and Adam (Maddie) Mangrum as well as three
great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty (Jerry) Plunk; brothers, Paul (Charlotte)
Garrison and Clyde (JoAnn) Garrison.  She also leaves many other relatives and friends
to mourn her passing. The family would like to thank the staff at Methodist North for
their attentive and compassionate care as well as her doctors and their staff for
their kindness, respect and caring in addition to their professional treatment during
her illness. The family will receive friends at a catered reception Friday, Aug 22,
2014 from 5:00 pm until the service at 7:00 pm at the Munford Funeral Home Millington
Chapel in Millington, Tennessee.  Additional visitation will be held at Mount Vinson
Methodist Church in Stantonville, Tennessee on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 1:00 pm
until the service at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow in the Mount Vinson Cemetery.
Fellowship will follow at the church hall.  Mable asked that her funeral service
be joyful.  Please help her family make it so.  Online condolences can be made
