Thurston Alvin Rowland

Thurston Alvin Rowland, born in Tipton County, TN on June 21, 1929, passed away
January 29, 2014. Mr. Rowland was a Marine, retired from MLG&W, and a member of
Shelby Forest Baptist Church, the Millington Masonic Lodge for 50 years, the Scottish
Rite, and the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Friday, January 31 and the service will be at 2 pm Saturday, February 1 all at the Millington Chapel. Interment in Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery. He leaves five daughters, Sandra (Ken) Joyner, Brenda
Broom, Wanda (Larry) Poindexter, Ramona (Sonny) Long, Kathy (David) Spencer; two
brothers, Ray Rowland and Floyd Rowland; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Oliver and Cordie Corrine
Rowland; sister, Betty Ruth Smith; brothers, Joe Rowland, Howard Rowland, and
Marshall Rowland.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St.
Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

Jim Zapalac

JIM ZAPALAC, 93, retired U.S. Navy veteran, died January 24, 2014, in Memphis, TN. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., with 7:30 prayer vigil, Tuesday, January 28 at Munford Funeral Home, Millington Chapel in Millington, TN. Service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 29 at St. William Catholic Church, Millington, TN. Interment will follow in Northridge Wood-haven Cemetery. Jim was born October 29, 1920 in El Campo, Texas. He graduated from El Camp High School in 1938, entered the US Navy in 1940 and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a Naval Officer in 1967 with a medical discharge after 27 years of service. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He received Bachelor and Masters degrees in Business Administration from University of Memphis in 1971 and 1972 graduating Magna Cum Laude and accepted as a member of Delta Mu Delta and Beta Gamma Sigma. He was a certified speaker of Toast-masters International. Mr. Zapalac was owner and manager of a successful real estate and insurance company in Millington, TN from 1973 until retiring again in 1991. He served as Scoutmaster and Committee Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, past President of Saint William Catholic Church Men’s Club, past Charter member and Vice-President of the Millington Environment Control Board and he served on the Frayser Mental Health Care Committee. He was a life member of the Retired Officer’s Association, life member of the Fleet Reserve Association and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0252, lifetime charter member of National WWII Memorial and Charter member of the Millington Kiwanis Club. He served as President of the Club and Lieutenant Governor of the LaMissWestTN District of Kiwanis in 1984-85. He was inducted into the “Legion of Honor” of Kiwanis in 1996 for 25 years of active service and was awarded the “Kiwanis Tablet of Honor” in 1998 for outstanding service in Kiwanis. He joined the Knights of Columbus Council #6321 in 1971 and served as Grand Knight in 1972-73 and 1987-88 and District Deputy in 1977-78. He helped organize and became a Charter Member of Monsignor Leppert 4th Degree Assembly #1928 and served as a Faithful Navigator in 1983-84 and 1987-89. Mr. Zapalac received the Bienville Provential District of Tennessee, 4th Degree, Outstanding Sir Knight Award of Merit for 1996-97 and became an Honorary Life Member in 1999. He was past Chairman of Saint William Catholic Parish Lay Council and served at Eucharist Minister and Lector at Saint William and past member of the Church Finance Committee. He wed Ilene Jones on June 28, 1947 and they were married for 66 years. She preceded him in death by nine days. He leaves one son, Jamie Zapalac. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Salvation Army, Kiwanis or charity of donor’s choice.

Richard Arthur Gibson, Sr.

Richard Arthur Gibson, Sr., 87, of Bartlett, TN passed away January 23, 2014. Mr. Gibson
was a US Navy veteran and served during WW II. He is survived by his wife of 63
years, Patricia Howell Gibson; children, Rick (Sherry) Gibson, Cyndi Vance, Cathy
Gibson, Cheryl (Joe) Andreuccetti, Sandra (Keith) Gilooly, and Lisa (Marty) Tartera;
12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends
Saturday (Jan 25) from 11 am until the service at 1:00 pm at the Millington Chapel.
Interment with military honors to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may

Johnny Mack Blain

Johnny Mack Blain, 65, of Millington, died January 17, 2014.  The family will receive friends 12 - 2 pm until the service time at 2 pm, Monday, January 20 at the Munford Funeral Home Millington Chapel.  Private interment in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Blain is survived by his sister, Bessie Hardimon; brother, Walter Ray Johnson; sister-in-law, Mary Johnson; niece, Tammy DiGange; nephews, Bobby Allen Johnson and Eric Johnson; great-nephew, Jason Hardimon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin A. and Johnnie Maude Varnum Blain; sister, Virginia R. Fielder; brother, Bobby F. Johnson; and sister-in-law, Joy Grace Johnson.

Ilene Zapalac

Ilene Zapalac, 88, retired realtor, of Millington, died January 15, 2014 at Kirby Pines Manor.  The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 19 at Munford Funeral Home Millington Chapel. Service will be 12:30 p.m., Monday, January 20 at St. William Catholic Church. Interment in Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery. Mrs. Zapalac was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Rhodes and Lottie Taylor and two brothers, Leonard Leatherwood and Warren Jones. She leaves her husband, Jim Zapalac; one son, Jamie Zapalac of Millington, many nieces and nephews.
